In the event of approval of the CoV vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer for children aged twelve and older also in Austria, minors are to be vaccinated with it by the end of the summer, Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) announced today at a press conference.
“We have the goal that by the end of August, the largest possible number of children and adolescents between twelve and 16 should be vaccinated,” the minister said.
The vaccine is already being given to minors in the U.S. and Canada, he said. If it were to be released for twelve- to 15-year-olds in Austria as well, information campaigns for parents would begin in the coming weeks, Mückstein said. However, prioritizations would continue to be decided by the states. But there is enough vaccine available, the minister said.
The approach of prioritizing according to age and risk groups has “proven extremely successful,” said Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP). “Vaccination works, it protects,” and the number of deaths has fallen sharply, he said. “In the next few weeks, it will be possible for everyone to receive a vaccination who wants one.”
Study: vaccine also safe for children 12 and older
The EMA plans to decide today whether to approve Biontech and Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine for children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15. Previously, a study was published attesting to the preparation’s safe efficacy against Covid-19 in this age group as well.
